Dutch Corner
In the Smart Good Food Shop we have a wide selection of Dutch delicacies from 'drop' to 'stroop wafels' and everything in between.
Did you know?
'Drop' is the Dutch word for liquorice and made of an extract of the roots of a liquorice bush, which grows in sub tropical regions. This extract produces the real 'drop' taste. Dutch people are brought up with 'drop', the salted and the sweet variety. We know it to be just there and think it is going to be available everywhere. But how wrong can we be, there is no other country in the world where people eat 'drop' like we do, nor the 'drop' as we know it.
Nobody seems to know where the word 'drop' comes from, the British and Americans call it liquorice, the Germans call it Lakritzen en the French reglisse. But nothing can quite beat our 'drop'. Come in and have a taste!
In the shop
Upstairs you will find some products that no Dutch person can do without (nor can some British people) like Calve mayon(n)aise and peanut butter, chocolate sprinkles and cacao.
We also have a selection of biscuits, of course the old favourite syrup waffles as well as spiced speculaas. Syrup waffles are even nicer when eaten warm and an easy way of doing this is laying your waffle on the top of your mug with steaming hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate for a few minutes. Mmmmm enjoy.
Obviously in our cheese selection you will find some old Dutch favourites. Make sure you visit the cheese counter on the groundfloor.
