Indonesian corner
Did you know?
Indonesia was a Dutch colony in years gone by and Indonesian cooking is widely known and appreciated in the Netherlands . You can compare it with the knowledge and appreciation of Indian cooking in this country.
Many people we meet have visited the Netherlands and have tried Indonesian food and enjoy it! But it is very difficult to get the ingredients here, that is until now!!
In the shop
We stock a variety of spices, sambals (spicy chilli condiments), atjar (pickled shredded vegetables), noodles, crackers and sauces. And we have some cooking books to help you along, unless of course you want us to prepare it for you and you just come and get it as a ready meal!
It is always nice to try out new flavours. The Indonesian kitchen uses soy sauce, chilli and coconut, making it a sweet and hot contrast. Although you can make it as hot or mild as you like, just go easy on the sambal if you don't like it too hot.
Some of the spices you will come across:
Ketoembar , dried and ground seeds of the Coriander. It tastes milder than the fresh coriander
Koenjit , made from the turmeric root, yellow in colour and always included in a curry powder mixture
Laos , made from the root of the galanga, family to ginger. It has a light citrus taste and is ideally used in Indonesian cooking
Djintan , ground cumin seed, not too sharp in taste
Sereh powder ground lemongrass
They may have unusual names, but they are all well known spices. No funny business in the Smart Good Food Shop!
